learning!

i learned cool stuff today about fascism! i am taking a political science class called "peasant politics," and this week we talked about a small and not very well known fascist uprising among small farmers in france. This was in contrast to general idea, both scholarly and general, that most peasant revolutions are leftist. BUT...the neat part was drawing distinctions between the types of peasants that participated in each. the fascist peasants were landowners with hired worker, but the poorer peasants, the ones who worked for them, were being simultaneously recruited by the communists! Therefore, it is my conclusion that it not the situation that influences which way a revolution will go, but what "type" of people, in this case, what type of "peasant" is participating in such uprising.
we talked about charismatic leadership as key indicator of fascism. i thought that was pretty neat, because the discussion was turned to MLK and his religious rhetoric and eventually, his refusal to adopt any view other than his own....mildly fascist? who really knows. but it's been published in the leadership literature and i just think it's so neat!
